      History of Boulder, Colorado

The City of Boulder was built on mining and, like many other Colorado towns, was born by the mid-1800s gold rush. In the spring of 1859, the “Rush to the Rockies” saw some 100,000 prospectors set out west to the Rocky Mountains, many winding up in today’s Boulder area.

Incorporated by 1871, Boulder began with a population of just 340 people. The town mostly catered to the mining industry and Pearl Street quickly became the place for small businesses and commercial endeavors.

Around the turn of the century, Boulder grew to more than 6,000 residents. They established a university in 1877 and built the renowned historic Hotel Boulderado in 1909, which is still in operation today.
