Historic Oriental Theater

The Historic Oriental Theater was officially opened on Christmas Eve in 1927 and is a stunning example of the Exotic Revival architecture of the era.

Until being recently renovated and converted into a live music event venue, the Historic Oriental Theater sat in disrepair, left closed and shuttered for nearly 45 years.

Although commonly referred to as a historic theater, the building wasn’t registered as an official historical landmark until 1997. Since reopening, the theater has undergone numerous extensive renovations while maintaining much of its original mystique.

Today, the theater is a popular local space holding various functions and events such as public shows, live music concerts, and private bookings such as weddings, parties, and corporate events.

Native Roots is less than ten minutes from the Historic Oriental Theater and is easy to get to. From our nearby dispensary in Highland, take W 32nd Avenue to Federal Avenue and take a right to head north. Then, take a left on W 44th Avenue and drive until you reach Tennyson Street. The Oriental Theater is on the right-hand side.

Sloan’s Lake Park

Another one of Denver’s beautiful green spaces and Denver’s biggest lake is less than ten minutes from Native Roots Highland. Sloan Lake Park is a gorgeous area for recreational sports, multi-use trails, picnic areas, and boating.

Not only is Sloan Lake the biggest lake in Denver, but the 177-acre Sloan Lake Park is the second-largest park in Denver. The best part about Sloan Lake Park is that visitors get a spectacular view of the Rocky Mountains and the Downtown Denver skyline.

Find the nearby Sloan’s Lake Park only ten minutes away from Native Roots Highland. Take the Federal Highway south until you get to W 17th Avenue and turn left. Drive until you see the lake on your right and follow signs for parking to Sloan’s Lake Park.

History of Highlands Neighborhood Colorado

The elevated area northwest of the Platte River overlooking Denver is known as the Highlands. It isn’t one single district, but rather a collection of several districts. It features Victorian-era homes and buildings mixed with modern-style architecture.

Officially incorporated in 1875, Highlands quickly held more than 35 separate subdivisions by 1890 but was eventually incorporated into Denver due to issues with the ability to provide adequate transportation and public services.

Today, Highland is the largest historic residential area in Colorado and is divided into three distinctly diverse districts: Highlands Square, Tennyson Street, and LoHi (Lower Highland). Now, the area is becoming a popular tourist destination and trending neighborhood for young singles and families.
