      History of Colorado Springs

Did you know that Nikola Tesla built and operated his famous wireless power experimental station in 1899 on Knob Hill? His lab was near the current intersection of Foote and Liowa Streets in Colorado Springs.

Around Tesla’s time, Colorado Springs had just been founded only three decades prior in 1870. By the late 19th century and early 20th century, Colorado Springs had lived through its gold rush mining era, survived two world wars, and suffered The Great Depression.

It wasn’t until the 1950s and 1960s that Colorado Springs’ population began to grow upon the influx of new industries including the transformation of Camp Carson into Ent Air Force Base, now the U.S. Olympic Training Center, and the establishment of Colorado State University.

NORAD built its main facility in Cheyenne Mountain and the Peterson Air Force Base was established out of what was formerly Peterson Air Field. The area is also home to Falcon Air Force Base, a missile defense and satellite control center, as well as the Air Force Space Command, which is located on Peterson AFB.

Today, Colorado Springs supports nearly half a million people while maintaining its cozy and quaint Rocky Mountain charm. Its primary industries are the U.S. military, tech, education, tourism, and of course Olympic training.
